The property at 4228 Route NY-212 occupies land historically stewarded by the Munsee and Lenape people. In the early 20th century, it became part of Woodstock’s expanding artist colony movement.

Formerly known as “Garden of the Gods,” founded in 1908, the site developed alongside Byrdcliffe (1902) and the Maverick Colony (1905), contributing to the region’s cultural identity. In the 1930s, the property transitioned from a summer resort known as Wildwood Farms into temporary quarters for the New York Youth Association.

In 2019, The Source reopened as an experimental space dedicated to sustainable community, creative inquiry, and residential living in the Catskills.
